Candy, chocolate, ice cream and cake are just some of the treats that we love and crave for from time to time. Like us, our pets also deserve treats – it’s a good way to reward them for good behavior and a job well done during training. It’s also good to give them refreshing treats on a hot sunny day. If you want to make sure that your furry friend is eating and snacking healthy (without the preservatives from the store-bought variety), it’s ideal to make your own dog treats.

Here are some easy healthy dog treat recipes you can make:

Crunchy Apple Pupcakes

What you need:

  • 1 egg
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 3/4 cup water
  • 1 cup dried apple chips (unsweetened)
  • 1/4 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/8 tablespoon vanilla extract

Combine egg, water, applesauce, honey and vanilla extract in a bowl. Stir in whole wheat flour, apple chips, and baking powder to the bowl. Mix to combine ingredients well. Pour mixture into lightly greased muffin pans and bake in a pre-heated oven (350F) for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Allow to cool before giving to your pet.

Leftovers Doggie Trail Mix

What you need:

  • Potatoes, boiled, peeled and sliced
  • Leftover meat (if seasoned, remove flavoring), shredded or sliced into bite size pieces
  • Fruits (except grapes and raisins), sliced into bite size pieces
  • Vegetables (except onions), sliced into bite size pieces
  • Cooking spray

Mix together all ingredients in a large glass bowl and spray lightly with cooking spray. Mix. Place in a food dehydrator or a pre-heated oven (200F) until dried out. Allow to cool then pack in re-sealable plastic bags.

Cinnamon Pumpkin Ball Treats

  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 4 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

In a large bowl, combine pumpkin, water, molasses and vegetable oil. Carefully stir in whole wheat flour, cinnamon, baking powder and baking soda to the bowl and stir until mixture softens.
